Despite having lived in Cambridge for three years and become involved in many aspects of the community here there are new things that pop out at me every day - this morning I discovered a new cafe with a great view. Now I just need to get them to retune the radio... ;)
You've probably heard of Segways... Well, Air Wheels are the next big (small) thing to come out of the self-balancing gyro-controlled personal transportation gadget field. I spoke to Scott Young on my Drivetime show about the Air Wheels; how they work and what they feel like to use: You can find out more information at www.theairwheel.com... Here's a current price list from the site:
You've only got a minute? Not a problem! Anna was unbelievably quick in this evening's Glorious Thesaurus game - she beat you to the answer, right?! Anna wins a GOLD CAR*. *not real gold, not real car.
Cambridge is flooded by tourists at the moment - as it is every summer! From Australia, Asia, Europe and the Americas, our small medieval city is packed! Naturally all these tourists want to take pictures of the places they see on their travels... Perhaps equally obvious is that they will want to be in some of those photos. I've been welcoming visitors into Corpus Christi College in the centre of town and have enjoyed watching many (botched) attempts at taking selfies... ...A short girl tries to snap a perfect shot with her (...apparently headless...) boyfriend... ... A 'plus-size' couple from America - who visited Oxford yesterday and found the weather to be much more agreeable there - take a series of shots in a lame effort to squeeze both of their smiling faces into the shot... ...and many, many tourists who struggle to take that elusive selfie that captures both the beautiful backdrop of Corpus' New Court and the beaming face of the photographer... Enter the selfie stick...! This invention (the use of which is exclusively reserved for tourists who don't have to worry about seeing anyone they know) provides a little bit of distance between the phone/camera and the people being photographed. It's a clever idea but it looks rather ridiculous! I wish I'd been brave enough to take a snap of the man I saw this morning using one - he had a pink remote-control clicker shaped as a cartoon animal - if I see any more being snuck out of backpacks I'll be sure to whip out my camera and upload the picture here! I case you are looking to get a similar stick, here is link to one model on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B002IRW4Y8/ref=mp_s_a_1_sc_1?qid=1405125465&sr=8-1-spell&pi=AC_SX110_SY165#immersive_view?1405125494720 Stacey was yesterday's Glorious Thesaurus contestant and, despite a flurry of complaints claiming that the clues broke the rules of the game, she managed to work it out in a respectable time! Did you work it out faster? Tim Squirrell is the President of The Cambridge Union Society; Cambridge's largest student society and the oldest continually run student society in the UK. We had a long chat about the society as well as Tim's personal experiences whilst at Cambridge. Tim has been involved in college sports teams and student newspapers as well as the Union. You can hear our full chat here: Olivia came on the Cam FM Drivetime show to tackle this Glorious Thesaurus challenge. I thought she worked it out quite fast, but maybe you were shouting at your radio before she realised what it was?! Olivia wins a GOLD CAR* for playing. *not real gold, not real car
If all else fails I can rest assured that Yo Sushi will pay me to stay away from their kitchens...! I bought the sushi necessaries with a friend with the aim of recreating some sushi favourites without the hefty price tag... To make sushi we needed:
Boiling the rice and adding the rice vinegar was really simple... Just weigh it out and chuck it in a pan.
But rolling is actually surprisingly difficult. You can see in the photo just above that I kept squashing mine, so they became Sushi Ovals rather than rolls! With a bit of practice my rolls became more convincing - I found that it helps to roll it much tighter in the centre and that helps it stay round. Anyway, what let me down more than anything else was what I thoughtlessly shoved inside my sticky rice and seaweed! I recommend making sushi as it's a lot of fun, but steer clear of these three taste bud offences:
Giacomo was a fantastic first contestant on my new game Glorious Thesaurus! I really thought he'd got it about half way through the clip and then he throws me a curve ball... He got there in the end though and walks away with a GOLD CAR* for playing. *not real gold, not real car.
I really enjoyed chatting with Mike Dignam on my Cam FM Drivetime show. Mike is a great singer-songwriter - he's just released a new EP, It Was Written, and it has (deservedly) shot to third in the UK iTunes Singer-Songwriter Chart. You can hear our chat here: If you represent a talented musician or performer and they'd like to have a chat on the show, please get in touch.
