I went to see the Rembrandt late years exhibition at the National Gallery in London.
It was really fantastic, so if you have a chance to get a ticket you should give it a go!
As you walk in you are confronted, face to face with one of Rembrandt's most famous (and impressive) self portraits. There were four more in that room alone and so many incredible paintings and etchings in the following 6 rooms.
It's quite a strange feeling seeing all of these masterpieces in the same place. I found myself criticising paintings that I would usually have marvelled at slowly because there were so many exceptional paintings and Rembrandt's standards were so high.
There was one painting - of the saint Bartholomew (incidentally, the same name as my teddy bear, who is still waiting to be beatified) - that didn't sit right amongst the others. Oddly the portrait seemed too modern, with an almost 1940s style. My Grandad - who's an artist - questioned whether it is in fact a genuine Rembrandt... Hhmmmmm?!?!
My only niggles are that the rooms are too small for the paintings, which could do with some extra space... The lighting is poor with key parts of paintings disappearing within the glare of the light directed at the canvas... And it was exceptionally busy which made it feel slightly cramped.
That said, it's well worth going to see the impressive collection of Rembrandt's work as it'll be a long time before you get another chance!
