Go and see Miss Saigon. It's fantastic. I went with a couple of friends and it's the best thing I've seen for years. 5 stars (and the rest).
Though the run is currently sold out, there are still day tickets available (and they're not bad seats at all!). The seats we got (Loge 3) were on the far right of the dress circle and would have cost £57.50 (probably plus a fee...) if we'd bought them in advance; we paid £20.
The set is famously fantastic - for me it ranks up there with the clever barricades of Les Mis and the moving race course of the original West End production of Starlight Express. It's powerful and expressive... and there's a helicopter.
I won't spoil it for you because I want you to go and see it for yourself, but that helicopter scene is intense! One of those scenes that make you want to scream and punch the air it's that strong.
Whilst the helicopter scene was my most hotly anticipated moment it was matched throughout by emotionally charged and moving scenes; I'm sure I wasn't the only one with a watery eye in the second act.
It wasn't heavy going though - even if I did feel like my heart was been wrentched from my body at times - because lighter moments pop up throughout the show, often provided by the engineer.
Miss Saigon has everything I would want from a musical: great music, an incredible set, emotionally charged scenes and some easy-going entertainment. On top of that add the strong cast and crew who are working on this production and I'm not exaggerating when I say you must see it.
The only thing that surprised me (apart from the ending) was the order of the curtain call - I expected Kim to take the final bow, but this wasn't the case.
Let me know what you think when you see it/ if you've seen it!
