The University Museum of Zoology in Cambridge is the first museum to join me for my new feature, "Featured on Cam FM", which encourages societies and museums in Cambridge to show off their star pieces!
This week, the Museum of Zoology is keen to show off the Okapi (Okapia Johnstoni).
The Okapi is a secretive mammal from the rainforest of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The animal, a close relative of the Giraffe, only became known to science around 1900.
Its colouring is very striking, with a reddish-brown back, and legs with black and white stripes. The Okapi on display in the museum was purchased in 1912.
The museum, of course(!), asks that visitors do not touch this specimen to protect it from going bald, but do go and visit to see this wonderful creature on display whenever you have a free moment in Cambridge!
Join me on Cam FM 97.2 every weekday from 10am!
